Ruby Empress

“Ruby Empress, a disco-drone-funk band out of Gothenburg, Sweden, is quite possibly the new face of a revived, refreshed and necessary indie” – Bitchslap Magazine, 2016

Dreamy falsetto vocals, beat driven psyche and a musical landscape that combines chill breezes, stormy rainfalls, light minimalistic pop, organic grandness, dark eerie choirs and sweet ballads. Ruby Empress is equally super-light and super-deep. They don’t shy away from guilty pleasures, they embrace them. All tracks are written, produced and mixed by Ruby Empress themselves.

Their first single Deluca, became an immediate viral hit upon release last year, quickly generating millions of streams, reached #3 on Hype Machine and #11 on top 50 viral tracks in the world on Spotify. It got widespread support from music blogs and hipsters accross the globe comparing them to Tame Impala. Their debut EP “Empressionism”, released in February 2017, was met with praise from tastemakers everywhere including Line Of Best Fit, Neon Gold, Indie Shuffle and Noisey, who exclusively premiered the music video for the song “Escapism Deluxe” calling it “CARNAL EXCELLENCE”.

November 17th 2017 Ruby Empress released their new single “Kimono House”. Kimono House is a song about love, time and momentum, and the loss of it. Kimono House is a metaphor for our world today. A house of things to wear, be it clothes, masks, personalities or gender.

Ruby Empress’ live act has been praised for its boldness as well as its eccentricity. They played their first ever London shows this past year at The Lexington and Metropolis Rising. In September they played their first Germany shows with a packed Prinzenbar at Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg and Fluxbau Bergfest in Berlin. Ruby Empress will return to London for the Great Escape’s “The First Fifty” live launch at the Courtyard Theater on November 21st and are confirmed to play the Eurosonic Noordeslag in Netherlands January, 9th next year.

The physical members of Ruby Empress Tom Serner (main vocals), Axel Agervi (keyboards, vocals), Melker Petterson (guitar/bass) and Gustav Hyllstam (drum/programming), are all 22 years old, from Gothenburg, Sweden, which is home also to such diverse artists like The Tough Alliance, Union Carbide Productions, The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, Goat and Ace Of Base – all in one way or another relevant to Ruby Empress, as is the french electro scene, retro 1970’s acts as ELO, Supertramp and Steely Dan as well as classical music from the 1900s and back. Most of all though Ruby Empress is inspired by art and especially that of ancient masters, pop-art and contemporary appropriation.

Ruby Empress has just taken their first steps towards the big international arena with a team including Paradigm and Coda plus Glassnote Entertainment, this group has an exciting future ahead of them.
